Autumn weddings at Colville Hall

Beth & George opted for a beautiful autumn barn wedding at Colville Hall in Essex. It was the perfect setting for a stylish, lovely couple.

The day actually started at Down hall, which is 10 minutes drive from Colville Hall and a popular combination for my couples to book. Down hall is a luxury 19^th century mansion with plush grounds and ornate décor.

I utilised the gorgeous communal area just outside the bridal quarters for the wedding dress and bridesmaids outfits and then continued the morning session with the ladies where the hair and makeup took place.

Of course, it’s customary to have a little Prosecco/Champagne as you work your way into one of THE most important days of your life. In some instances it’s absolutely necessary – trust me, some weddings can be like we’ve hit the party before the couple even say ‘I do’.

It’s all in good spirits though and a positive is that it distracts everyone away from my camera and me, so I get natural reactions – something I always look for and prefer in my work.

The plan was always to finish hair and makeup at Downhall and then head to the couple Autumnal wedding venue – Colville Hall, where the wedding dress goes on and we’re ready to walk down the aisle.

I anticipated a hive of activity while the ladies settle into the bridal suite at Colville Hall. It was a good time to go and get some groom prep and see George for the first time that day. I like a classic, timeless and elegant look to my work so I kept it simple with the large barn window light and let the scenes roll naturally. I rarely spend longer than 15-20 minutes with the guys. They appreciate this approach and then they often head to the bar for some Dutch courage themselves.

Groom prep over and I headed back to the bridal suite to capture Beth in her breath taking dress – one of my favourite designs of 2022.

This wedding took place at the end of October but we were so blessed with that stunning low autumn sun throughout the day. It really is touch and go this time of the year but the gods were smiling down on Beth and George for their big day.

AUTUMN BARN CEREMONY AT COLVILLE HALL

The bridal suite sits at the bottom of a perfectly crafted pathway and out of view from any prying eyes. Once everyone had taken their sits, all that was left was for the star of the show to make her entrance.

The ceremony was lovely and went without a hitch. I have to say if you’re looking for an autumn venue that offers a rustic barn feel to it, check out Colville Hall as an option – you won’t be disappointed.

Drinks were served just outside the ceremony barn, which is convenient for everyone. In the summer, you’ll walk back down the path and onto the grass where the fountain is. You have options depending on the time of year and of course, the weather.

I like to give my couples some time to grab a drink and mix with their guests before whisking them off for some couple shots. We had some light restrictions (being an autumn wedding), so I had to squeeze the candids, couple shots and group shots in before 4.15pm when the light has all but gone. Knowing the place really well helps. I’ve photographed weddings at Colville hall at all times of the year so we achieved everything we wanted on the day and kept it all very much relaxed.

The reception takes place opposite the ceremony barn and continues with the rustic charm. You’ll spend the rest of the evening in this space for your 3-course meal, speeches, cake cut, first dance and party. Once again, it’s all very convenient and wedding guests friendly at Colville Hall – particularly when you book an autumn wedding and it gets nippy outside.
