London Iconic Wedding Photography: St Paul’s to The Shard

London Iconic Wedding Photography: St Paul’s to The Shard

Hello everyone! I’m Chris from Chris Woodman Photography, and today I’m excited to share a special story about a truly unforgettable wedding I had the privilege to photograph. The couple, Katherine and Tucker, chose to say “I do” in two of London’s most iconic venues—St Paul’s Cathedral for their ceremony and The Shard for their stunning reception. This is a story about love, London’s timeless charm, and the magic of capturing those perfect moments in some of the city’s most celebrated landmarks.

A Day of Elegance and Iconic London Wedding Photography

When Katherine and Tucker reached out to me, I knew immediately that their wedding was going to be something special. They wanted a day filled with elegance, breathtaking scenery, and a touch of London’s grandeur. Their vision was perfectly aligned with my style: luxury London wedding photography that captures a relaxed and mostly unposed day with a classic and timeless feel.

Starting the day at the wonderful Leonardo Hotel on Godliman Street where both the bride and groom chose to get ready, it provided the perfect and most convenient place to embrace the final moments of single life before tying the knot. St Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s most historic and revered landmarks, was the backdrop to this stunning location. I aimed to capture the grandeur of the setting before entering the hotel and checking in with the couple. As a regular London cathedral wedding photographer, I understand the logistics and what goes in to providing a calm approach whilst still staying one step ahead.

Katherine looked stunning in her wedding gown by the large by window. It was a relaxed start for the stunning bride surrounded by her nearest and dearest. Tucker’s room was on the other side of the hotel to ensure they didn’t see each other. Just the best man and himself getting ready in their room which I think gives you time to reflect and take it all in before heading over to the ceremony.

St Paul’s Cathedral Wedding Shots: A Historic London Landmark

St Paul’s Cathedral wedding shots are some of the most memorable I’ve ever taken. The cathedral’s majestic dome and intricate architecture create a breathtaking backdrop for wedding photos that truly stand out. I decided to walk behind the bridal party to show St Pauls in the background, and then shot in front to capture the iconic London street walk scene. After a few moments outside the gates, we moved inside to utilise the stunning interior.

Inside the cathedral, the natural light filtering through the stained glass windows created a warm, ethereal glow—perfect for capturing the final moments between the bride and her family. It’s always a privilege to be the London cathedral wedding photographer where every corner offers a chance for beautiful wedding photos.

Images of the actual ceremony aren’t permitted online, so after the ceremony, we took some time to explore the exterior of the Cathedral—walking alongside the road and around the back of the building for some iconic London wedding photos with the cathedral as a backdrop. The contrast between the historic church and the modern skyline was a perfect reflection of London’s unique blend of old and new.

I loved the way Katherine and Tucker chose to head to the Shard – in a black London taxi of course! A classic way to travel around the city with a glass of champagne no less. There were some breathtaking photo opportunities on route (particularly with the bride looking out of the window and the Shard in the distance).

The reception at The Shard was the highlight of the evening. Known as London’s tallest building, The Shard offers some of the most spectacular views of the city. Wedding photography at The Shard is truly a special experience, especially during sunset when the city’s skyline is bathed in golden light. We captured some stunning wedding reception photography against the panoramic windows, with London’s skyline providing a dramatic, unforgettable setting.

Luxury London Wedding Photography: Capturing the Moment

Throughout the day, my approach as an elegant London wedding photographer was to focus on capturing authentic moments and laughter in a natural way—while also capturing the grandeur of each venue. The combination of historic architecture and modern skyscrapers gave us so many opportunities for creative wedding shots.

We arrived at the Shangri-la at the Shard and headed into the lift for drinks and canapés in the sky lounge (level 34). Beautiful panoramic views of London while you enjoy refreshments. What could be better?

There were no group shots to be had, so this allowed the couple to enjoy their day with the guests. This allowed me to capture the more candid moments that my couples book me for.

Why Choose London Landmark Wedding Photos?

There’s something truly special about wedding photography in London’s iconic venues. Whether it’s the grandeur of St Paul’s Cathedral wedding shots or the sweeping city views from The Shard, these locations add a unique depth and character to your wedding. As a historic London wedding photographer, I love helping couples tell their story amidst these timeless backdrops.

For Katherine and Tucker, their wedding at St Paul’s to The Shard was a perfect reflection of their love and their connection to London.

The Ren room is tucked away down a small corridor close to the bar where the guests were enjoying drinks. This was to be where the wedding breakfast took place and it was impeccably decked out in a lavish way that only London could do. It’s a fairly small and intimate room overlooking the London Skyline. The bride and groom entered the room and the food was soon to follow. We had the speeches after the meal which then turned in to the evening party once this was complete.

There’s often a natural lull at any wedding and the wedding photography at the Shard was no different. I whisked the couple away for some time alone where we could capture some intimate moments with just the 2 of them. There’s a room next to the bar at the sky lounge that offers an incredible view of London where the sun sets perfectly in the background. Fortunately, one of the staff at the Shard informed me that this room was free to use during this stunning sunset. We closed the door for some privacy while Katherine and Tucker enjoyed a peaceful moment together.

The next set of images are not always available to you if you choose to have your wedding at the Shard. It’s an area that you reach if you go to the 52nd floor. Renowned as the highest hotel pool in Western Europe, the infinity Sky Pool offers guests an exclusive oasis with unparalleled views of London. It was at the discretion of the staff that this was even an option for us to capture some memories here. Luckily, the got the nod to visit this truly breathtaking scenery. We were only there for 5-6 minutes, but it was enough to get what we needed.

After catching our breathe from the 52nd floor, the Ren room had been turned around in preparation for the evening nuptials. The live band had completed their sound check and the sun had set over the city. Everyone was in high spirits and willing to join the couple on the dance floor. A fitting way to end a gorgeous wedding!
